2011 IllinoisLLAA Book Scholarship Winners
We are pleased to announce the first recipients of University of Illinois Latina/Latino Alumni Association Book Scholarships. Martin Musuruana and Isael Huipio have each been awarded $500 to help pay for the cost of their books during the 2011-12 academic year!
Martin, a Junior majoring in Molecular & Cellular Biology, is an active member on campus, works with youth and migrant communities and holds leadership roles, including as part of La Casa Cultural Latina’s advising committee. In addition to his commitment to the community, his commitment to academics is evident: he has been on the Dean’s list, part of the National Honor Society and a James Scholar. Congratulations, Martin, on all your hard work!
Isael, a Junior majoring in Nursing, is a Presidential Award Scholar. Combining his interests with the needs of the community, he volunteers and holds leadership roles with health organizations that serve youth and elderly populations. He says, “The biggest challenge facing a Latina/Latino obtaining a college education at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign is the lack of diversity on campus and the lack of Latino professionals to serve as mentors.” He says IllinoisLLAA can be an important part of the solution by establishing a support structure of Latino Alumni in support of current Latina/o students. Congratulations, Isael, on your dedication and success!
